UNDERGROUND is where Atlanta began. Basically it is a six historic city blocks in the heart of Atlanta transformed into an urban market with unique shopping, dinning, entertainment and nightlife. It is an important destination for people who visit Atlanta. Most of the visitors are attracted by its bustling activities and its over a century's architectural features and history. It was first built during Atlanta post-civil war reconstruction era (1866-1871) at the spot where the oldest Georgia railroad station was reconstructed to connecting trains from Atlanta to other American cities. When concrete bridges started to build over rail tracks, and shops moved up level, the original buildings were abandoned and became basement for storage. Part of it turned into sites for speakeasys & juke joint with music and illegal drinking . The city continued to grow at street level during 1920's and a 5-block area was completely covered up after 40 years. The city beneath the city thus formed.
