The Palisades Interstate Parkway - New Jersey



The Palisades Interstate Parkway is a 62km limited-access highway in the States of New Jersey and New York in United States. The route is named for the New Jersey Palisades, a line of cliffs rising along the western side of lower Hudson River, in northeastern of New Jersey and southern New York. It was started construction in year 1947 and officially opened for traffic on 28th August, 1958. The entire New Jersey portion of Palisades Interstate Parkway is within Bergen County and designated as a state scenic byway known as Palisades Scenic Byway. Palisades Interstate Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike are the only highways that use sequential exist numbering in New Jersey as all others are based on mileage in the State.



The Palisades are among the most dramatic features in the vicinity of New York City, forming a canyon of Hudson, north of George Washington Bridge, as well as providing a vista of the skyline.

Palisades Interstate Parkway is a major commuter route into New York City from Rockland and Orange County in New York State and Bergen County in New Jersey State.



New Jersey is bordered on the north and north east by New York and parts of which are across Hudson River and Upper New York Bay.




New Jersey is No. 11 in ranking as the most populous and densely populated in the nation.



New Jersey, the 3rd wealthiest in United States, lies mostly within the sprawling metropolitan areas of New York City. There are 16 counties in New York City.

The Palisades rise vertically from near the edge of Hudson River, 300 ft at Weehawken, a town sites at the top of the cliffs across Manhattan, and gradually increase to 500 feet near northern terminus.



Palisades was derived from the Latin word "Palus" meaning stake as described by Lenape native tribes as cliff rocks like rows of trees.



It was believed that the Palisades was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2800 years with historical tribes Suchon Lenape along the river coast.



The Palisades are part of Palisades Interstate Park and also are a National Natural Landmark.

Hudson River flows through Hudson Valley into New York Bay, becomes an estuary between New York City and Troy of New York State that separates the city from New Jersey.



New York City is located in northeastern of United States approximately half way between Washington D.C and Boston at the mouth of Hudson River, which feeds into a natural sheltered harbor and flow into Atlantic Ocean. The location helps New York City grow in significance as a trading city.



Much of the New York City is built on three islands of Manhattan, Staten Island and Long Island.
